Hermits
One of Dad’s favourites, not too sweet and full of lovely old-fashioned spiciness. It’s from the St. James Islington United Church cookbook.
Set oven to 350°
1/2 cup butter
3/4 cup brown sugar
Cream butter, add sugar gradually.
1 egg, well beaten.
1/2 cup raisins
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup dates
Stir in egg, then fruit.
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1 tbsp. boiling water
Add baking soda mixed with boiling water.
1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. allspice
Stir in flour sifted with spices. Drop from a spoon onto buttered cookie sheet, 1" apart. Bake 12 to 15 minutes.
